Poet “Black Disciple” Mnelisi Mawela

Poet Mnelisi "Black Disciple" Mawela

Mnelisi “Black Disciple” Mawela says he discovered his talent at Queens High in the Eastern Cape when his English teacher identified him out of all his classmates.

According to Mawela his craft is influenced by the love of Hip Hop and everything he sees around him such as social inequalities and everyday challenges the youth face.

“In 2005 I discovered my talent because I discovered who I was” he says

Mawela says he only came to Gauteng in 2006 to study marketing at the Ekurhuleni East College at their Benoni Campus.

He says one of the major highlights in his career was when he started performing at the Benoni museum then moved up to the  30/30 exhibition and artistic roots in Swaziland.

Mawela says some of the challenges he has faced is the lack of respect people from Kwatsaduza have for poetry and art as a whole.

He is currently working on a project called “Poetry in motion” along with the Springs Library which will showcase open mics and performances that will create a platform for young artists in Kwatsaduza.

He also says “the world is yours, just use your background as the cornerstone of your foundation.”
