Woman kidnapped by fake prophets

KwaThema – A woman (29) was kidnapped and robbed at gunpoint along Nkosi Street last Wednesday afternoon.

It is alleged the woman was walking alone around 3pm when a man approached her, asking for directions to a place she didn’t know.

KwaThema police spokesperson, Captain Thabo Sibuyi says it is alleged another man also appeared and asked her the same question.

“Shortly afterwards he then started prophesying to the woman, telling her what he knew about her family.

“The second man asked to call his brother who was also having problems and was in need of a prophet.

“After a few minutes, as the three stood there, a white Polo stopped next to the complainant and she was forcefully pushed into the vehicle,” he says.

Sibuyi says the driver and other men drove to a nearby shopping mall and the woman was taken to an ATM.

“They pointed a firearm at her, forced her to withdraw R3 000 from her account and took her back to the car.

“They drove back towards KwaThema and she was dropped off at Mthembu Village,” he says.

Sibuyi says her handbag containing her cards, certificates, ID and cellphone was stolen.

“No arrests have been made at this stage.

“However, it is believed these men were working together.

“We urge our residents to avoid talking to or trusting people they don’t know.

“It is also important always to be aware of your surroundings,” says Sibuyi.
