Soccer tournament to fight drugs

Tsakane SAPS soccer team playing against Duduza SAPS team

Tsakane – Members of the police in Tsakane joined the fight against substance abuse by participating in a soccer school winter soccer tournament last Wednesday.

The tournament was hosted at Tsakane Stadium with young people and the police challenging each other.

Tsakane police spokesperson, Lerato Mngomezulu says three teams were crowned champions from different categories.

“They include Amaqcawe FC who played against Witpoort Rehabilitation Centre, JE Malepe Secondary School against Geluksdal Secondary School and Tsakane SAPS who played against Duduza SAPS.

“In attendance and support of the tournament were members of Department of Community Safety, Lieutenant Colonel Oliven Letloenyane, from the office of the Cluster Commander ( EEC), Station Commander of Duduza Lt Col Bheki Mhlungu and Tsakane Vispol Head Lt Col Rajesh Ramlall.

“We are happy that we were able to reach the objective of the tournament because the young players were kept busy and were kept off the streets.

“We are urging business people and other stakeholders to host similar initiatives.

“Most of the young people who end up taking drugs do so because they have a lot of time on their hands and give in to peer pressure.

“These activities will discourage them from being naughty and keep them busy.

“We are also encouraging those who are already addicted to keep up the fight to clean up their act,” she says.
