WARNING: Severe thunderstorm approaching

Residents are warned that severe thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected today.

The South African Weather Service has issued a warning for today that wind speeds of up to 37km/h are expected.

Severe thunderstorms are observed moving to Ekurhuleni and Lesedi Municipalities with heavy downpours and small hail.

Heavy rain leading to possible flash flooding can be expected in places over Gauteng.

Residents are advised to take extra caution when driving and make sure doors and windows are closed.

In a previous press statement released by the Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), spokesperson William Ntladi says communities affected by these adverse weather conditions, are advised to contact the call centre immediately.

Take the following precautions during thunderstorms:

• If you are outdoors, seek shelter immediately.

• Avoid sheltering under trees.

• Shelter pets and vehicles from the weather.

• Disconnect electrical appliances.

• Avoid using telephones.

• Don’t shower or bathe during thunderstorm.

• Avoid being near any metal or steel structures of any sort.

• Do not play sport during a thunderstorm.

“DEMS is always prepared to respond timeously to all incidents within the municipality.

“Communities are also expected to assist in reducing the number of emergencies,” says Ntladi.

In case of an emergency, contact 10177 or 011 458 0911 or cell phone 112.

Ensure you have the emergency call centre telephone numbers saved and visible on your telephone or cellular phone.
