American football training camp hosted in Tsakane

Gridiron South Africa hosted its third annual American Football Training Camp at Tsakane Stadium on Saturday.

Tsakane – The initiative was founded in Tsakane in 2015 to help grow it into a national federation for American football even though the sporting code is still in its infancy in South Africa.

President of Gridiron South Africa, Stephen Radebe, says the primary objective of the project is to recruit young participants who are likely to have social challenges.

“They may be exposed to negative pressures from society which includes peer pressure,” Radebe says.

“We aim to groom them to become responsible members of the community using the on-and-off skills from American football participation.

“Over 70 people participated, including 10 volunteer coaches who are part of our coach training programme.

“The players were from the community and two local schools.”

Stephen says the theme of their 2018 programme is ‘Interception Before Nyaope’.

“We plan to use it as a concept of stopping drug/substance users before they start using,” he says.

“We are calling on anyone who is interested in learning about the sport to come forward and join our team.

“We also encourage those who are willing to give their time to learn about American football coordination, development and establishment of local or school teams.

“Interested stakeholders such as schools, corporate sponsors, government or municipal representative and others are also invited,” Radebe says.

“The next planned camp is for Johannesburg on March 24 before we bring it back to Ekurhuleni (Brakpan) in April.”
