KwaThema poet uses his talent to address social ills

Edgar Mashaba’s Visions of a born free album addresses social ills.

KwaThema – The 22-year-old started writing poetry at the age of 13 and has never looked back.

He says he was motivated by his English teachers to write and perform poems during school functions and community events in order to master his craft.

“Poetry has allowed me to be able to express myself better and engage with my peers on the stage.

“As artists, we are blessed with a talent to heal and mend broken hearts.

“We are able to communicate the seen and unseen situations and unspoken events which many fear to touch,” he says.

Edgar is currently promoting his first official album titled Visions of a born free, which was released last year.

“I decided on this title because often born frees are labelled as absent minded and don’t recognise the sacrifices which were made to attain freedom.

“The album covers poems on some of the challenges that South Africans face on a daily basis.

“They include rape, women and child abuse, crime, teenage pregnancy, dropping out of school and xenophobia.

“It motivates and encourages listeners and victims that there is a better day ahead to change the way we see things and react to situations.

“People from all walks of life will be able to relate to the album,” he says.

Edgar can also be spotted on the small screen presenting Vision and Encounter on Tshwane TV.

“The platform has offered me the opportunity to improve my craft as a public speaker.

“I am able to express myself better than when I first started,” he says.

He says that the video of his upcoming album is shared on YouTube.
