Police officer shot while responding to a suspicious driver speeding in KwaThema.

KwaThema – A police officer was shot and injured after responding to a suspicious silver/grey VW Golf driving at high speed around Chao Pozzi along Ramothibe Street in the early hours of Tuesday.

The police gave chase to the speeding vehicle.

KwaThema police spokesperson Captain Thabo Sibuyi says there were five occupants in the vehicle who started shooting at the police vehicle.

“One of the officers was shot in the right thigh and was rushed to hospital to receive medical attention.

“The officer is in a stable condition,” he says.

Sibuyi says the suspects fled the scene on foot after abandoning their vehicle on the scene.

“It was later taken to the impounding station for more investigations.

“No one has been arrested thus far.

“We are calling on the residents to help us in tracing the whereabouts of the suspects.

“We are calling on the community to refrain from turning and targeting the police.

“We will not be able to police the community without the help of the residents,” he says.
